Brown House Moths (Hofmannophila pseudospretella) are often found in birds nests that are in a loft, attic or roof space, from where these moths can then migrate into living areas of the home or business. Brown House Moths are sometimes called secondary carpet moths, secondary clothes moths or secondary stored food product moths.The damage that can be caused to carpets, clothes or food stuffs is by the larval stage of the moth which develop over a period of 2 to 5 months depending on the temperature and humidity in the area where they a living.The larvae stay within food material which is normally made of high protein and the larvae of Brown House Moths are often found in museums and libraries as well as the home or business. In a museum or library, Brown House Moths can cause damage to antique soft furnishings or to the binding material in books! The adult Brown House Moth has brownish speckled wings with fringes of hair at the back of the wings and they are about 8mm in length.
